Managing our environmental impact

View NQA Certification

Berco UK is committed to understanding the impact of our business on our environment.

We're committed to continually improve the way we work, ensuring that we comply with legal or mandatory requirements.

WHAT WE'RE PLANNING FOR THIS YEAR …

Good environmental practice is what our customers expect and together with our employees we work hard not to disappoint them.

What we're doing

  • We aim to ensure that we consider our impact on the environment, which will be at the heart of everything we do.
  • Environmental best practice, wherever it's reasonably practicable, is incorporated into the decision-making processes across our company

This touches everything we do, from how we run our site; to how we provide just-in-time services to our customers.

How we're doing it

Right now, we're focusing on our impact in 3 key areas:

  • Energy
  • Waste
  • Pollution

At Berco UK, we're committed to behaving in a way that respects the environment.

Energy

In an effort to reduce energy costs, Berco UK will drive energy efficiencies in the maintenance and management of our premises, raise awareness and encourage good practice amongst all our employees, contractors and visitors, and promote the benefits of energy efficiency throughout the Company.

Waste

Our aim is to continue to reduce the amount of resources we use, and that we re-use and recycle more of the things that we currently throw away. This will be helped by our Environmental Management System (EMS) based on accreditation to ISO14001 (a universally recognised environmental standard) that we implemented during 2009.

Recycling More

  • We already have recycling stations for wood, metal, cardboard, paper and plastic.
  • Our cardboard and plastic waste is compacted, baled and stored ready for onward distribution to reputable recycling partners.
  • We have introduced recycling stations in the offices and canteens for plastic cups & bottles, batteries and cans.
  • We’re looking for solutions to better dispose of our wood waste.
  • We’re planning to introduce new methods to treat our metal waste.

Our efforts during 2009 achieved approximately 70% recycling of waste produced in 2009, which we plan to improve further in 2010.
